Andrew Ellis - 1982

Why I Wanted to Interview Andrew
Persistent, highly motivated and driven are three great words to describe Back Cap and Canterbury Wizard Andrew Ellis. After making his debut for Canterbury in the 2002-03 season Andrew had to wait 10 years before receiving a call-up to the New Zealand squad. In that time he had to deal with, and overcome five stress fractures in his back. It is this persistence and drive to get to the top, despite the obstacles, that I was interested in exploring with Andrew during our interview.

Sporting Achievements & Accomplishments
  • Andrew has scored 910 first class runs at an average of 26.76, with a top score of 78 against Northern Districts
  • Andrew has taken 32 wickets at 43.68 with a best analysis of 5 for 63 against Otago
  • In 11 List-A one day matches he has scored 157 runs at 22.42 with a top score of 46 and taken 3 wickets at just over 40
  • Andrew started off as a genuine all-rounder in Under-19 cricket, but built his reputation mainly as a bowler. However he made significant contributions with the bat in the 2010-11 season where he scored his maiden first-class hundred

More Interesting Information
  • A right-handed batsman and right arm fast medium bowler, he made his debut in 2003 against Auckland
  • Andrew had surgery on his back (for multiple stress fractures) in April 2010. Once recovered he showed fantastic form which lead to his inclusion into the black caps squad
  • Andrew has played 26 State Championship games for Canterbury, up to the end of the 2006/7 season
  • Andrew played for New Zealand Under-19s in the 2000/01 season in 2 'Tests' against South Africa under-19s
  • Andrew has appeared for Marylebone Cricket Club in 2004
